Johnson: Budget shows commitment to basic education

HARRISBURG, June 30 – State Rep. Kenyatta Johnson, D-Phila., today released the following statement after the House of Representatives approved a $28.05 billion state budget bill for the 2010-11 fiscal year:

"This year's budget process was difficult because of the economic climate across the state, and across the country, and the fact that we began the fiscal year with an almost $400 million deficit. In addition, revenues throughout the year came in $1.2 billion under estimate.

"The good news is that this budget does not include any tax increases for the residents of Pennsylvania. However, without additional revenue sources, negotiating the budget was challenging.

"This budget prioritizes my commitment to Pennsylvania's children by increasing basic education funding by $250 million or 4.5 percent, and early intervention funding by $9 million. Given our current economy, the fact that we were able to include such an increase is significant."
