Johnson to hold community appreciation event
to celebrate Point Breeze community, activist

HARRISBURG, Aug. 24 – State Rep. Kenyatta Johnson, D-Phila., is inviting the public to a community appreciation day celebrating the Point Breeze neighborhood and the life of a special woman who made a difference there.

The late Mamie Nichols, a pioneering and much-honored community leader, through her drive and determination brought the neighborhood of Point Breeze back from the brink when it suffered a decline in the 1970s. In the decades since, Nichols founded the Point Breeze Federation and transformed the neighborhood into a thriving community. She passed away last month.

The community appreciation event will take place from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 on the 1500 block of 22^nd Street and the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Point Breeze Avenue in Philadelphia.
