James says parolees and former offenders have right to register and vote

Voter registration deadline Oct. 6

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 10 – As the Oct. 6 deadline approaches, state Rep. Harold James is reminding Pennsylvanians, including former offenders, that there's still time to register to vote for the November election.

"This year's high-profile presidential race has attracted the attention of people of all ages," James said. "To get involved and be eligible to cast your vote on November 4, make sure you are prepared and registered in time."

James said a resident is eligible to vote in Pennsylvania if he or she will be at least 18 by Nov. 4, a U.S. citizen and a Pennsylvania resident for at least 30 days prior to the election.

"This includes convicted felons who have served their sentence and have been released from prison – or will be by Nov. 4," James said. "A recent news story provided misinformation stating that paroled or probated felons are ineligible to vote, but that is incorrect."

In 2000, a court struck down as unconstitutional a Pennsylvania law that had forced convicted felons to wait five years after their release from prison before being able to register to vote.

James said people in jail awaiting trial, in prison for a misdemeanor or on probation or parole also may vote.

Residents can register to vote in a number of ways: in person or by mail, or they can even begin the process online. More information on how to register and where to vote on Election Day is available from James’ constituent service office by calling 215-462-3308, or by contacting the Philadelphia Voter Registration office at 215-686-1500 or 215-686-1509.
