House designates January as 'Financial Aid Awareness Month'

HARRISBURG, Jan. 27 – The state House today adopted a resolution sponsored by Rep. James Roebuck, D-Phila., designating January 2009 as "Financial Aid Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

January marks the first chance for students to apply for financial aid to support their higher education endeavors, and Roebuck is encouraging all college-bound students to begin the process of securing financial aid by applying for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

"For many students, financial aid is the only way they are able to attend college or some type of training after high school, which makes it critical to their long-term success," Roebuck said. "There are many resources available to students in need of financial aid, but we must do a better job of increasing awareness of those resources. It could mean a great deal for many deserving students."

The FAFSA helps determine eligibility for federal student aid such as the Pell Grants, student loans and college work-study programs, as well as State Grants through the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. For details on applying, students should visit www.pheaa.org or call PHEAA at 1-800-233-0557.

Roebuck's resolution (H.R. 15) also commends the daily efforts of PHEAA and the Pennsylvania Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. The lawmaker said Pennsylvania is a national leader in providing need-based grants and loans to students through PHEAA and the support efforts of PASFAA.
