Legislators to hear about proposed 'STEM' initiative for disadvantaged students

HARRISBURG, Jan. 25 – State legislators will hear a presentation Tuesday about a proposal to close the achievement gaps for disadvantaged students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, also known as "STEM" subjects.

The presentation will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26 in Room 108 of the Irvis Office Building in the state Capitol Complex. Media coverage is invited.

The statewide Urban STEM Strategy Group will provide lawmakers with a presentation about the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement initiative for disadvantaged students across Pennsylvania. It would be the ninth such initiative in the United States, building on Pennsylvania's five existing STEM regions. The five regions would be responsible for implementing the evidence-based math and science initiative, specifically targeting underperforming Title I and/or state-designated "turnaround" schools.

The presentation is sponsored by state Rep. James Roebuck, D-Phila., chairman of the House Education Committee; and state Reps. Josh Shapiro, D-Montgomery; and Kenyatta Johnson, D-Phila.
