Future teachers: New program starts this summer in Philadelphia

Program application window open for current high school juniors

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 26 – A new training program is coming to Philadelphia this summer for current high school juniors interested in a teaching career in urban schools.

State Rep. James Roebuck, D-Phila., chairman of the House Education Committee, announced today that the new Pennsylvania Governor's School for Urban Teaching is now accepting applications for this summer's program.

"I'm pleased to have worked with the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Temple University's School of Education to establish this summer's five-week training program," Roebuck said. "We're looking for Pennsylvania's best and brightest high school students who will someday be our next generation of urban teachers."

From June 29 to Aug. 2, participating high school students will have a unique opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of teaching in an urban school. Students who apply will be judged strictly on the merits of their applications. Successful students will be awarded a full scholarship and weekly stipend to attend the program while living in Temple's residential facilities in Philadelphia.

Roebuck secured funding for the new school's creation under the 2007-08 state budget. He said the program is largely based on the existing Governor's School for Teaching at Millersville University, but has been designed specifically to address the rigors of urban teaching. It will be the ninth Pennsylvania Governor's School of Excellence, each of which is designed to enhance the quality of the state's education system.

Applications are due March 14. More information about the program and applications are available by visiting the program's Web site at www.temple.edu/education/pgsut , e-mailing joski@temple.edu or calling 215-204-1741. Students may also contact Erin Dixon in Roebuck's Harrisburg office at 717-783-1000 for information.
