Siptroth underage drinking bill voted out of committee

HARRISBURG, Feb. 29 – State Rep. John Siptroth, D-Monroe/Pike, said the full House may soon vote on his measure regarding parental notification of underage drinking at Pennsylvania colleges and universities.

The legislation (H.B. 229) was voted out of the House Liquor Control Committee this week.

"I'm proud this important measure was approved in committee," Siptroth said. "I'm eager to see it come up for a vote among all my colleagues in the House."

Siptroth's bill would require parents or guardians to be notified should their child be found purchasing, consuming, possessing or transporting alcoholic beverages at any of Pennsylvania's state-owned or state-related colleges and universities.

Under the measure, campus officers would have five business days to report underage drinking incidents involving enrolled students to the institution. The institution would then be responsible for notifying the students' parent or guardian.

"Parents have a right to know if their child is being safe and responsible while away at school," Siptroth said. "Hopefully my measure will mean peace of mind for parents of college students across Pennsylvania."
