Office offers state services, protection against slowing economy
By state Rep. John Siptroth
In my last column, I highlighted economic components of the governor's budget proposal and several pieces of legislation aimed at protecting Pennsylvania residents from recession.
Now I would like to alert you to a free and local service aimed at helping homeowners and buyers shield themselves from any difficulties caused by the current slowdown of the housing market.
Beginning April 2, staff from United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania will be at my Marshalls Creek office every Wednesday from 9.30 a.m. to noon to offer foreclosure prevention counseling, pre-purchase counseling and reverse mortgage counseling.
The UNC is a nonprofit, grassroots United Way agency that has been operating in Scranton since 1923. Its counseling services are approved by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.
United Neighborhood Centers can be reached at 570-343-8835 and soon will have a toll-free number for the Pocono region. More information is also available at www.uncnepa.org.
The services available to you don't end there. Especially during an economic downturn, many of you have concerns about health care, unemployment compensation, financial assistance for higher education or other state-related programs.
My offices can assist you with any of those needs and much more, including automobile registrations and driver's license applications, birth and death certificates, Pennsylvania income tax problems, issues with the Department of Public Welfare, questions about utilities, consumer complaints, PACE cards for senior citizens, the Property Tax/Rent Rebate, and various other state programs.
Stop by my office at 4 Jay Park Dartmouth Drive in Marshalls Creek or call 570-223-2636 for more information about the United Neighborhood Centers or to inquire about any state-related issue. Additional information about state programs also can be accessed on my Web site, www.pahouse.com/Siptroth.
