Siptroth resolution recognizing Chiari Malformation Month adopted

HARRISBURG, July 1 – State Rep. John Siptroth, D-Monroe/Pike, announced today that his resolution (H.R. 830) recognizing September 2008 as Chiari Malformation Month was adopted by the state House Monday.

"I hope this recognition will create some awareness among the public, and even the medical community, for those struggling with the disorder," Siptroth said.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Chiari malformations are structural defects in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance. Normally the cerebellum and parts of the brainstem sit in an indented space at the lower rear of the skull. When part of the cerebellum is located below that space, it is called a Chiari malformation.

Though it is much more common than once thought, many people suffering from Chiari malformations go years undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to the wide range of symptoms related to the disorder that are often shared with other health problems.

Siptroth introduced H.R. 830 to increase awareness about Chiari malformation after hearing of a distant relative's struggles with the disorder.

Siptroth said more information on Chiari malformation is available by visiting the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke's Web site at www.ninds.nih.gov.
