Siptroth votes to approve 2008-09 state budget

HARRISBURG, July 4 – State Rep. John Siptroth, D-Monroe/Pike, said that he is pleased with the 2008-09 state budget that passed today, and release this statement on two of the budget's biggest priorities:

Education

"All of the school districts in my legislative district will receive between a 7 percent and 10 percent increase in their basic education funding, much higher than the statewide average of 3 percent. This attempt to better direct state education dollars to the districts where they are needed most is a result of the costing-out study initiated by my House Resolution 460," Siptroth said. "It is gratifying for me, after years of hard work, to finally move toward recognizing the needs of  growing school districts like those in Pike and Monroe counties."

Energy

"This budget makes significant investments in renewable energy initiatives that will create jobs, reduce our reliance on foreign oil and make Pennsylvania a leader in biofuels production. With the $650 million in funding outlined in the Energy Independence Fund, state biodiesel production incentives and subsidies, and investments in ethanol production, I am very excited about the direction Pennsylvania is heading on the energy front. I have been working with a number of local companies producing fuel additives and DEP Deputy Secretary Dan Desmond on energy consumption reduction devices to bring a piece of these investments back to our area. "
