New local industry will help consumers, advance energy independence

by state Rep. John Siptroth

Recently I participated in an event at the Burnley Workshop of Poconos to celebrate a technological breakthrough that is good news for not just our area but all of Pennsylvania and will help us meet our goals of cutting energy costs and guaranteeing energy independence for our state.

DMI Manufacturing officially entered a partnership with the Burnley Workshop in November. DMI produces an item called an Energy Bank Unit. This energy conservation technology has been shown to reduce energy consumption by an average of 20 percent in residential, commercial and industrial models.

An EBU is a system that uses a sensing device to monitor power consumption and then delivers corrected, conditioned and harmonically adjusted electrical power without spikes or surges to maximize power efficiency.

This technology has the potential to impact both local residents and our state in a variety of ways.

First, and perhaps most importantly to local residential and commercial consumers, EBUs could be a useful remedy for the skyrocketing energy prices anticipated when utility rate caps expire statewide in 2009, as they did in part of Pike County last year.

I am encouraging county, local and municipal governments, as well as the state and school districts, to consider and then implement this technology as an energy-saving and cost-cutting mechanism. As a bonus, any funds saved at these levels could also translate into a savings for taxpayers.

Further, in today’s business climate, which has seen more and more jobs outsourced to foreign countries, DMI has the potential to create jobs here in northeastern Pennsylvania, with each product to be shipped worldwide bearing a “Made in Monroe County, Pennsylvania” label.

Finally, this technology could play a major role in meeting the goal of energy independence for Pennsylvania first outlined by the governor and supported by many legislators from both parties in Harrisburg.

The technology’s creator, Guy Lestician, is a longtime resident of my legislative district. He contacted me in 2006 looking for guidance in an effective way to bring his new technology to the attention of Pennsylvania’s leaders.

When we learned about his creation, my staff and I offered all the assistance we could in promoting his technology to local, regional and state agencies. As a result, I was joined at the kick-off event at the Burnley Workshop by Daniel Desmond, deputy secretary for the state Department of Environmental Protection, who spoke favorably of the technology.

I think this is just the beginning of a far-reaching impact the Energy Bank Unit could have. I will continue to offer my assistance whenever I can and hope this technology is used to the fullest.
