Brown hosts holiday events

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 11 – State Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown hosted a series of events in the 190th Legislative District leading up to Christmas.

For the third time since her first election in 2009, Brown hosted her annual holiday open houses. On Dec. 20, around 500 local residents attended the winter wonderland event at Sayre High School on Walnut Street, and then on the 22nd, another 1,000 attended the event at the School of the Future, on Parkside Avenue.

Both events provided information on early intervention programs, designed to keep students in school through graduation and also cut crime in the community. In addition, a wide variety of entertainment was provided, from magicians to DJs, dance troupes and clowns with face painting and balloon art. The holiday feel was amplified by a holiday music sing-along and refreshments.

The event at Sayre was highlighted by a giveaway of 25 bicycles, which were donated by a local business.

“I was thrilled with the turnout of the events,” Brown said. “It was wonderful to see so many people from the community volunteering their time, gifts and energy to share the holiday spirit!

“There were gifts for the children and outstanding and outrageous entertainment, which had everybody clapping, laughing, singing and dancing. I had a blast and I know the children did as well!

“I was also amazed by the generosity of one anonymous donor who provided my office with 200 fresh cut trees to give away on Dec. 21," Brown said. "I did not have much time to get the word out, but all the trees were claimed by families who otherwise may not have had the traditional Christmas symbol in their house this year.

“I look forward to continuing to serve my district in 2012 and want to remind you that my staff is available to help with any state-related issues you may encounter this year.”
