Lowery Brown postpones Black History Month celebration

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 24 -- State Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown has postponed her free celebration of Black History Month by one week because of the forecast for bad weather. The event is now scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 6 at the Greater Bible Way Temple, 1461 N. 52nd St.

"Unfortunately, mother nature wouldn't cooperate with our original plans," said Lowery Brown, D-Phila. "I'm still looking forward to hosting this salute to the many accomplishments that African-Americans have made to this city, state and country. I hope many will come out to celebrate our rich legacy."

Other than the change of date, most details of the event remain the same.

Lowery Brown said Councilman Curtis Jones and Carroll Park Community Council are serving as partners for the celebration.

There will be lunch and information fair from noon to 1 p.m. and entertainment and awards program from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Local African-American leaders will be honored.

Honorees include Bishop Audrey Bronson, the first woman to head the Philadelphia Black Clergy, Seth Williams, the first African-American district attorney in the state's history, and Lowery Brown, the first African-American woman to represent the 190th Legislative District.

The late Carol Campbell, who served as the 4th Ward leader, the late Jim Hughes, who served as the 60th District leader, the late Hardy Williams, former state representative and senator from Philadelphia, the late Joe Galloway, committee man for over 30 years in the 6th Ward, will also be honored.

The program will include entertainment by the Stuart Sisters, who will present a dramatic interpretation of the African-American experience.

Information on a variety of community and local and state-related resources will be available. Residents should call 215-879-6615 for more information or to register.
