Lowery Brown holds Black History Month celebration
PHILADELPHIA, March 12 – About 300 people attended state Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown's second annual Black History Month celebration Saturday at Greater Bible Way Temple in Philadelphia.
"It was a privilege for me to celebrate our rich history with so many African-Americans who made significant contributions to our city and state," said Lowery Brown, D-Phila. "Our people have a lot to celebrate and we certainly have a bright future."
Lowery Brown honored Bishop Audrey Bronson, the first woman to head the Philadelphia Black Clergy and Seth Williams, the first African-American district attorney in the state's history. She also honored community leaders Elsie Wise, Marvin Robinson, Gladys Meade, Geneva Black, Ruth Bazemore, Clifton Lowery, Michael Cormany, Terrance Lisby, Hassan Lloyd, Sister Aisamah Muhammad and Callalily Cousar.
The late Carol Campbell, who served as 4th Ward leader; the late Jim Hughes, who served as 60th District leader; the late Hardy Williams, former state representative and state senator from Philadelphia; and the late Joe Galloway, a committeeman for over 30 years in the 6th Ward, were honored posthumously.
Lowery Brown thanked Councilman Curtis Jones and the Carroll Park Community Council for serving as partners for the celebration.
"This certainly was a special day for our community," Lowery Brown said. "I'm looking forward to holding another celebration next year."
