Waters co-hosts successful Community Service Awards Banquet

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 17 -- State Rep. Ronald G. Waters, D-Phila./Delaware, and Community Friends Networking Together co-hosted the 6th annual Celebration of Community Service Awards Banquet. The banquet took place on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Renaissance Philadelphia Airport Hotel located at 500 Stevens Drive.

The banquet, which was standing room only, honored 11 people for their extraordinary contributions in their respective communities, neighborhoods and professions.

“I am so pleased with the success of the banquet,” Waters said. “These honorees are people that go above and beyond their duties every day. They are part of the group of citizens that assures you don’t have to have a special title to make the lives of those around you better.”

The 2008 honorees were Julia Chinn, Helen Divers, Steven King, Leslie Lewis-McGirth, Paul Moore, Amedio Pantoni Jr., Nathaniel Robinson, Samuel Staten Jr. and Carol Williams-Green.

This year’s Trailblazer Award was presented to Sam Staten Sr., business manager of Laborers’ International Union of North America, Union Local No. 332. In addition, a new award entitled the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award was presented to Bishop Keith W. Reed Sr., pastor of the Sharon Baptist Church.

Lisa Crutchfield, vice president of regulatory affairs for Exelon/PECO Energy Co., gave the welcome address. Honorees received a trophy and a gift from the hosts, along with a citation given by Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll. Many other state and local officials also attended, including Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter who gave a speech encouraging the award recipients to continue their good work. Rep. Louise Williams Bishop, D-Phila., offered the prayer.

Those who attended the banquet were treated to a host of entertainment, including the Denise King Jazz Ensemble, Evelyn Graves Ministry Choir performing praise songs and a performance by the Traci Hall Ensemble Dance Group.
