Capitol events Monday to spotlight National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
HARRISBURG, Feb. 4 – Two events Monday at the state Capitol complex featuring leaders of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus will spotlight National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
At 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8 in Room G-50 of the Irvis Office Building, state Rep. Ronald G. Waters, D-Phila./Delaware, chairman of the PLBC and chairman of the House Subcommittee on Health, will host the subcommittee's informational forum and roundtable discussion on AIDS awareness. Rep. Jake Wheatley, D-Allegheny, vice chairman of the PLBC, will participate as a member of the subcommittee.
At 1:30 p.m. Monday in the state Capitol Rotunda, Wheatley will hold a news conference about National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, joined by Waters and state Sen. Vincent Hughes, D-Phila./Montgomery, Democratic chairman of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee.
Media coverage of both events is invited.
African-American males account for the highest percentage of all AIDS cases in Pennsylvania at 38 percent, and African-American females account for the third-highest percentage at 12 percent.
