Waters presents $10,000 grant to local center
PHILADELPHIA, June 5 -- State Rep. Ronald G. Waters, D-Phila./Delaware, Thursday presented a $10,000 grant to the Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Education Center in Philadelphia.
The grant will be used to help pay for the Park Management for Youth program, a six-week summer program for high school students, and a classroom instructor.
Students in the summer program spend half of each day in the classroom and the other half applying what they learn to real work experience. They monitor water quality, develop trails, control erosion, remove invasive plants, design gardens and plant trees. Each assignment allows the students to further develop their scientific skills and responsibilities. Students in the program gain an enhanced view of themselves and their community.
"It is important for children to be actively involved in their communities," Waters said. "This park program provides an enjoyable summer activity for high school students to do just that."
Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Education Center was founded in 1991 by Mrs. Carole Williams-Green and other local residents with a shared interest in the creek and its potential educational value to area children. Its mission is to help community members establish a personal connection to local ecology by giving them the skills to understand – and influence – both their immediate environment and global ecology.
