Waters: Low income students can get free ride to Harvard

PHILADELPHIA, June 6 -- State Rep. Ronald G. Waters, D-Phila./Delaware, is reminding families in the 191st Legislative District that if they or a family they know has a household income of $60,000 a year or less and an honor student graduating from high school, Harvard University will pay that student's tuition upon admission to the university.

"This academic year, 2008-09, Harvard University is embarking on an initiative to give full financial aid to undergraduate students from low-income and moderate-income families," Waters said. "This will ensure that academically deserving kids from these families aren't shut out of a great opportunity for an elite higher education."

In addition, Harvard announced reduced fees for students from families with incomes between $60,000 and $80,000.

Waters said the Harvard program would allow the vast majority of U.S. families to send a child who qualifies academically to the prestigious university.

"The chance to go to Harvard for free -- no tuition and no student loans – is the prospect of a lifetime," Waters said. "Education is the fabric of our society, and getting that education at a place of higher learning like Harvard is an enormous opportunity that opens many doors."

More information about Harvard's free tuition offer is available on Harvard University's financial aid Web site, www.fao.fas.harvard.edu, or by calling the school's financial aid office at 617-495-1581.

Questions about this or any state-related matter can also be directed to Waters' constituent service office at 215-748-6712.
