Waters holds news conference to end street violence
PHILADELPHIA, June 10 – State Rep. Ronald Waters, D-Phila./Delaware, recently held a news conference highlighting ways to end street violence with the campaign "Squash It."
The movement is a citywide effort using popular area rap artists, ex-offenders and Graterford prisoners with whom individuals can identify.
The conference included radio personalities Loraine Ballard Morrill, the Golden Girl and the Hot Boyz along with a live simulcast from the Graterford Prison Lifers United Community Action Network (UCAN). Local figure Sam Staten Jr., president of Union Local 332, was unable to attend, but has been and continues to be an avid supporter of the anti-violence movement.
"We are asking persons of all ages and eras who are living in the Philadelphia street crime culture to stop all conflicts and violence," said Waters, who sponsored the event. "We must put an end to these petty wars that erupt into bloodshed once and for all."
Some local raps artists who attended, including Darryl Shuler and Danny Diamonds, pledged to try to end unfriendly and negative conflicts.
For more information on UCAN, the event or how to be a part of the "Squash It" campaign, contact Waters' constituent service office at 215-748-6712.
