Waters announces House of Representatives Scholarship available for high school seniors
PHILADELPHIA, Dec.17 –State Rep. Ronald Waters, D-Phila./Delaware, said applications for the 2010-11 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship are now available online or at his constituent service office.
The scholarship is open to college-bound high school seniors who plan to attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school on a full-time basis. To qualify, students must have a 3.0 grade-point average, display leadership and commitment to their community, and exhibit financial need. Applicants are also scored based on an essay on the following topic: William Penn’s role in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its representative government.
The deadline to apply is March 1. Online applications are available at www.pahousescholarship.com.
The scholarship is awarded to two students each year. The scholarship amount is the equivalent of one semester's tuition at a State System of Higher Education university – about $2,500. However, recipients may use the scholarship at any Pennsylvania public or private university or career school. The scholarship may be renewed for each of a student's four years of undergraduate study.
Students who receive the scholarship also may be eligible to receive matching funds from SAGE Scholars Inc. and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s PATH Program.
The House Scholarship is privately funded by individual and corporate donations; no tax dollars or other public funds are used.
"It is important that we, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, encourage our children and young adults to pursue college and graduate degrees. Education is vital to one's success and our children are our future," Waters said. "We must invest in them," he added.
More information and applications are available at Waters' constituent service office at 6027A Ludlow St. The phone number is (215) 748-6712.
