Bishop: Green Energy Works! projects will power 80,000 homes
HARRISBURG, Jan. 4 – State Rep. Louise Williams Bishop, D- Phila., is pleased that the Green Energy Works! projects, a program by the state Department of Environmental Protection, will use waste material to generate power to 80,000 homes in Pennsylvania.
Bishop said $5 million of Pennsylvania's federal recovery money and $22 million in private funds would be used for eight innovative alternative energy projects that use biological materials such as sewerage, animal and food processing waste to generate enough energy to power more than 80,000 homes.
"It is important that we continue to invest federal stimulus funding on energy projects that in the long run meet our future long-term energy needs, "Bishop said.
Bishop said the projects will stimulate the economy by creating jobs and attracting additional investment capital needed to complete the projects.
The federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds support the state's Green Energy Works! biogas initiative. The projects are expected to leverage an additional $22 million in private investments.
The Green Energy Works! biogas grants are part of the $52 million initiative which uses Recovery Act money to fund innovative projects designed to help increase energy efficiency, reduce reliance on foreign energy sources, improve service reliability and reduce the impact of energy production on the environment. Green Energy Works! is also funding large-scale combined heat and power, solar and wind projects.
