House approves resolution to study after-school programs

HARRISBURG, July 3 – State Rep. Louise Williams Bishop, D-Phila., said today that members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives approved a resolution to ask the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to study after-school program availability in Pennsylvania.

Bishop, chairwoman of the House Children and Youth Committee, said the committee unanimously approved the resolution earlier this week.

"Much has been said about the need for after-school programs and how they benefit children and families," Bishop said."This report will give us a useful tool in addressing the benefits and deficiencies of after-school programs across the state."

The resolution's prime sponsor is state Rep. Jake Wheatley, D-Pittsburgh.

Bishop has sponsored and supported legislation to address a number of child-care issues, including day care, domestic violence, education and health care.

In one year, committee will deliver an after-school program report to House members.
