Bishop: Bring Pennsylvania’s transit system into the 21st century

Veteran lawmaker votes for transportation funding

HARRISBURG, July 18 – State Rep. Louise Williams Bishop, D-Phila., said she is pleased that the state’s transportation funding plan in the 2007-08 state budget package will provide an additional $1 million in funding to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority.

Bishop said the plan supplies much needed funding to Philadelphia and other regional transit stations and to fix roads and bridges across the state.

The veteran Philadelphia lawmaker addressed colleagues on the House floor Tuesday during debate on the transportation funding plan.

“The train is at the station and it is time to put our money where our mouth is and fund the transportation plan for better roads and bridges,” Bishop said. “We live in an age of cell phones, text messages and e-mails and we are still dealing with a transit system in Pennsylvania that is antiquated. That situation has to change.”

Bishop said the transportation spending plan will positively affect people in her district and it ensures that dependable mass transportation will continue in Philadelphia and across the state.

Bishop stated Pennsylvania’s transportation plan serves as an investment in mass transit.

“A healthy mass transit system is the basis for economic growth and well-being,” Bishop said. “I am proud to support such a far-sighted approach that provides for common transportation demands and also addresses future needs."
