  Bishop recognizes legendary Philadelphia broadcaster

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 29 – State Rep. Louise Bishop, D-Phila., has issued a condolence citation to the family of renowned Philadelphia disc jockey Hyman Lit. “Hy” Lit as he was known to his fans, was dedicated to the radio broadcasting profession for more than 50 years.

The legendary broadcaster passed away at age 73 following surgery at a Philadelphia-area hospital in November.

Bishop said Hy Lit of Narberth was a pioneer disc jockey who entertained thousands of music fans since graduating from the University of Miami. Hy Lit was known to music fans as “Hyski,” or “Hyski O’Rooney McVoutie O’Zoot” while hosting a “Saturday Night Oldies Party” on a local radio station.

Bishop has been a talk-show host in Philadelphia for close to a half century.

“I am saddened by the loss of not only a celebrated broadcaster who made the airwaves come alive with rock-and-roll music but a genuinely good person, “Bishop said. “He will be missed.”

Hy Lit was employed by many major Philadelphia radio stations – WHAT, WRCV, which is now KYW, WIBG, WDAS-FM, WPGR, WSNI and WOGL.

Bishop said throughout his career, Hy Lit hosted radio and television dance shows in New York and Philadelphia.

He was honored on the Avenue of the Arts Walk of Fame, received the first March of Dimes Lifetime Achievement of Radio Award in 1994 and an AIR award for best show in 1997, and was named Radio and Records magazine Oldies Personality of the year for 1999.

In 2003, he was also inducted into the Broadcaster Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame.

Bishop plans to introduce a resolution in the House of Representatives honoring the accomplishments of the celebrated Philadelphia broadcaster.
