Bishop's resolution to curb teen violence adopted by House
HARRISBURG, Dec. 18 – State Rep. Louise Williams Bishop, D- Phila., is concerned about the youth of today and is urging parents and to be role models for positive interaction with their children.
A resolution (H.R. 560) introduced by Bishop was adopted by the House this week that commends U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder for the high priority he has assigned to the problem of teen violence nationwide.
Bishop said Holder recently released a Department of Justice study that measured the effects of youth violence in America.
"We must go the extra mile to work with children and make a concerted effort to get parents and guardians to recognize the signs of teen violence," Bishop said.
The study showed that more than 60 percent of the children surveyed were exposed to violence over the past year, nearly 50 percent were assaulted at least once, 10 percent were injured in the assault, 25 percent were the victims of theft or vandalism, and one in 16 children was sexually assaulted.
Bishop is chairwoman of the House Children and Youth Committee.
