Manderino encourages students to apply for House scholarship

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 15 – State Rep. Kathy Manderino, D-Phila./Montgomery, said applications for the 2008-09 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship are now available at her constituent service office or through her Web site.

“The amount of aid students receive often determines whether or not they go to college,” Manderino said. “This scholarship gives recipients the opportunity to realize their dreams of a higher education.”

The scholarship is open to all college-bound high school seniors who plan to attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school on a full-time basis. To qualify, students must have a 3.0 grade-point average, display leadership qualities and a commitment to their community, and exhibit financial need. They also will be scored and reviewed based on a personal essay. The topic of this year’s essay is the Gettysburg Address.

Two scholarships are awarded each year equal in value to the cost of one semester of tuition at a State System of Higher Education university, approximately $2,500, but scholarship recipients may attend any Pennsylvania public or private post-secondary institution. The scholarship may be renewed each year for four years.

Applications must be postmarked on or before Tuesday, April 1.

Students also may be eligible to receive matching funds from SAGE Scholars Inc. and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s PATH Program. Recipients’ names will automatically be submitted to PHEAA, and a matching award may be given based upon remaining financial need.

The House Scholarship is funded by private donations, including those from former and current House members, as well as proceeds from special events; no taxes or other public funds are used.

More information about the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship Program, including complete eligibility requirements and application information, is available at Manderino’s Ridge Avenue constituent service office, phone: 215-482-8726; her Wynnefield Avenue office, phone: 215-879-8533; or at www.pahouse.com/manderino
