Manderino sworn in for ninth term, named chair of House Committee on Ethics

HARRISBURG, Jan. 28 – State Rep. Kathy Manderino, D-Phila./Montgomery, has been appointed chair of the House Committee on Ethics for the 2009-10 legislative session.

"I am very happy and honored to lead the House Ethics Committee in the upcoming legislative session," Manderino said. "This is a unique committee that is comprised of an equal number of Republicans and Democratic members. It operates above politics and focuses only on the highest standard of ethical conduct."

Newly elected House Speaker Keith McCall, D-Carbon, said he believes Manderino is the perfect choice to chair the committee.

"One of my goals as speaker is to help restore the public’s faith and trust in state government," McCall said. "There is no lawmaker more suited to lead that charge and stand up for the people than Kathy Manderino in her role as Ethics Committee chair. Her integrity and dedication is absolute, and she’ll do an outstanding job in this important role."

While focusing on her new role on the Committee on Ethics, Manderino has also been appointed to the Appropriations, Judiciary, Insurance, Health and Human Services, and Intergovernmental Affairs committees. She will serve as chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee for Health and Human Services and the Judiciary Subcommittee on Family Law.

Among her legislative priorities, Manderino plans to reintroduce her single-payer universal health-care legislation, which she believes is even more necessary in today's economy. The proposal would create the Pennsylvania Health Care Plan, a statewide, comprehensive health-care system that would provide comprehensive health-care coverage for every Commonwealth resident.

"As our economy struggles, the cost of health care becomes more prohibitive for too many Pennsylvanians. We must work at all levels of government to make sure everyone has access to health care, and I believe my proposal would allow Pennsylvania to do its fair share," Manderino said.
