State accepting applications for Gulf War bonus program

HARRISBURG, April 18 – State Rep. Kathy Manderino, D-Phila./Montgomery, announced that the state is now accepting applications for a new program that provides bonuses to veterans who served in the first Persian Gulf War.

The program will pay veterans $75 per month for each month they served in the war, up to a maximum bonus of $525. The program will also pay $5,000 to prisoners of war during the Persian Gulf Conflict and to the families of troops who died during active service in the conflict.

To be eligible for a bonus, a veteran must have served on active duty in the Persian Gulf between Aug. 2, 1990, and Aug. 31, 1991; received the Southwest Asia Service Medal; been a legal resident of Pennsylvania during the time of service; and served honorably.

The bonus program was created by the General Assembly and approved by Pennsylvania voters. It is similar to other bonus programs the state has provided for veterans of World War I, World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars.

The application deadline is Aug. 31, 2015. For detailed instructions on how to apply and applications, veterans and their families should visit www.persiangulfbonus.state.pa.us. A link to that Web site is also provided on Manderino’s legislative home page at www.pahouse.com/Manderino.
