Williams named vice chairman of House Democratic Policy Committee
HARRISBURG, Feb. 7 – State Rep. Jewell Williams, D-Phila., has been reappointed a vice chairman of the House Democratic Policy Committee for the 2011-12 legislative session by committee Chairman Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster.
"I'm honored to have been selected for this role and will draw upon my experience as a former police officer and community advocate to build consensus on issues important to the people in my district and across the state," Williams said. "That includes reducing crime, specifically gun violence; improving our schools and making education more accessible to all students; and putting Pennsylvanians back to work. I thank Chairman Sturla for giving me the opportunity to contribute to the committee's agenda and hopefully create solutions to the pressing problems before our state."
As a vice chairman, Williams will be influential in developing the caucus' policy agenda, in determining topics for public hearings and acting as a liaison to other caucus members on policy ideas. In addition, Williams may be called on to lead committee hearings and meetings.
"Representative Williams not only has years of valuable experience as a legislator and Policy Committee member, but also is a well respected member of the Democratic Caucus, making him a valuable liaison for the committee," Sturla said. "I welcome him back for another term as vice chairman, where I hope we can continue the important policy development we’ve worked together on in the past."
Each session, the House Democratic Policy Committee is tasked with holding public hearings and meetings across the state. It also serves as the catalyst to enacting major policy initiatives put forth by members of the House Democratic Caucus. The committee holds hearings around the Commonwealth to investigate local impact of certain issues and collect valuable expert input. For more information, visit www.pahouse.com/PolicyCommittee.
Williams is also serving on the House Appropriations, Aging and Older Services, Children and Youth, and Rules committees for the 2011-12 session. He also continues to serve as chairman of the Philadelphia Delegation.
