Williams: Mini-grants for autism services available

PHILADELPHIA, March 6 – The state Department of Public Welfare’s Bureau of Autism Services is offering mini-grants of up to $500 to support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, according to state Rep. Jewell Williams, D-Phila. Applications must be completed and postmarked by April 18 to be considered.

“The Department of Public Welfare is responding to an increase in the number of Pennsylvanians diagnosed with autism in recent years,” Williams said. “This particular program aims to reach out and serve individuals and families who are not able to access existing support systems for various reasons. Because the effects of autism can range in impact from mild to disabling, I believe it is important we make available every resource to support these individuals and their families. I hope we can spread the word about the availability of these grants.”

A 2007 study issued by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that one in 150 children has some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Boys are four times more likely to have ASD than girls.

Applicants may use the funds for respite/child care, summer camp, recreational or community programs, conferences/workshops and safety modifications. Grants can only be used for services that occur between March 1 and Aug. 31, and priority will be given to individuals who did not receive a grant from the Bureau of Autism Services in 2007. Total funding for these mini-grants is limited and is on a first-come basis. Not everyone who applies will receive funding.

Applications will only be accepted by mail. Additional information is available at www.autisminpa.org. The application is also available in Williams’ constituent service office.
