Williams announces Philadelphia African American Leadership Summit
HARRISBURG, March 9 – State Rep. Jewell Williams, D-Phila., and J. Whyatt Mondesire, president of the NAACP Philadelphia Branch, held a news conference today to announce this year's agenda for the upcoming Philadelphia African American Leadership Summit.
Williams said the summit is scheduled to take place April 10 and 11 at Temple University. At the summit, state and local leaders will focus on issues such as crime and safety, economic development and entrepreneurship, education, employment and job training, health care and housing, political empowerment, senior citizen needs and young adult outreach.
"The summit gives local and state officials an opportunity to come together and collectively assess the needs of the community," Williams said. "There are many unique and critical needs for residents who live in a major metropolitan area like Philadelphia, and I, along with other community leaders like Mr. Mondesire, am eager to help improve the quality of life for Philadelphians."
Williams said Donna Brazile is scheduled as one of the summit's featured speakers. Brazile is chairman of the Democratic National Committee’s Voting Rights Institute and a weekly contributor and political commentator on CNN’s Inside Politics and American Morning. In addition, she is a columnist for Roll Call newspaper and appears regularly on MSNBC’s "Hardball" and Fox’s "Hannity."
Williams serves as chairman of the state House Subcommittee on First Class Cities and Counties.
