Philadelphians employ Williams’ job fair to advance their careers

More than 700 people attend Williams’ event

PHILADELPHIA, April 9 – Joined by several community and corporate partners, state Rep. Jewell Williams, D-Phila., launched his fourth biannual job fair at Temple University’s Mitten Hall.

More than 50 employers from the Delaware Valley, in addition to educational and job training-institutes, met with prospective job seekers from all over the Philadelphia area. According to registration statistics and other forms of measuring constituent attendance, hundreds of people from all educational backgrounds and career experiences were deeply engaged with attending employers.

"The job fair is an event we sponsor every other year to help Philadelphians find gainful and lasting employment opportunities," Williams said. "I am seriously considering making it an annual event because, in today’s job market, people need more help than ever to obtain a better career and quality of life. I am fully committed to providing my constituents opportunities to network and learn how to market themselves in the work force."

A variety of career information was provided by employers, educational institutions and job-training programs. There was no indication that anyone was hired on the spot, but many of the employers said they met promising prospective recruits for various openings at their companies. Williams also had a large information display center that featured state information and brochures. He noted that he received positive feedback from both employers and career hunters.

A representative from Johnson and Johnson said, "For a participating employer, this was a great job fair because the traffic was constant, but not overcrowded, so it gave me an opportunity to really connect with prospective employees for my company."

"This was one of the best job fairs that I have attended in a while," added Karisha Dumas of West Philadelphia.

DaVonne Bey, a legislative intern in Williams’ constituent service office, helped coordinate the event. Bey, a senior at East Stroudsburg University, said, "Organizing all the components of this special event was a valuable learning experience and a pleasure for me to take the lead on. I was challenged by the opportunity and I learned a lot in working at Representative Williams’ office."

Additional job-posting information, as well as PA CareerLink job resources, is available at Williams’ constituent service office at 2220 N. Broad St. in Philadelphia. Information on future events is available by contacting the office at 215-763-2559.
