Williams says 19th annual Susquehanna Day Festival great success
PHILADELPHIA, July 1 – More than 30,000 festival-goers joined
state Rep. Jewell Williams, D-Phila., at Saturday's Susquehanna Day Festival
for a community celebration of peace, prosperity and health.
The festival also featured City and State Services Day. The City and State Services Day information walkway has become an integral feature of the festival, offering attendees information on a variety of local organizations and state programs.
"It’s always gratifying to know that we are able to help so many people in the community," Williams said. "The community continues to make this festival a special event where everyone can come together for some fun and information."
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and its Mobile Driver and Vehicle Services Unit rolled in and helped hundreds of people with licenses, registration and other paperwork and concerns.
The festival included an honors ceremony for several members of the community, including Charlie Mack, Rudy Battle and Gary Barbera, for their lifetime career contributions to Philadelphia.
Keystone Mercy Health Plan’s Health Pavilion attracted participants by offering line dancing and an array of health screenings. A children’s pavilion of rides and amusements entertained kids throughout the day, courtesy of Temple Children’s Hospital and Temple University Health System. A live boxing exhibition was a special feature this year with amateur and professional boxers from across the Commonwealth.
Four stages featured musical entertainment, including jazz, R&B and gospel performances. This year’s R&B featured performers were D.J. Cool, Chubb Rock, Jerry Butler and Stephanie Mills. Williams said festival-goers were extremely excited to be entertained by the national recording artists.
Williams added that plans are already under way for the 20th-year festival, including new and exciting initiatives aimed at celebrating family and the life of the community.
