Fall 2008 Knowledge About College Conference a success
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 30 – State Rep. Jewell Williams D-Phila., said his biannual Knowledge about College Conference, held Saturday, attracted hundreds of young Philadelphians, who came out to learn more about the college admissions process and financial aid opportunities.
Williams said the fall conference was created specifically for juniors and seniors, but all high school students were welcome to attend.
"This college conference has assisted hundreds of students over the past eight years," Williams said. "I understand the importance of helping young people get admitted into college. That is why I hold a fall and spring Knowledge About College Conference each year to educate students and their parents on ways to cut burdensome tuition rates and the transition from high school to college.
"Often, students get lost in the paperwork and don’t know where to turn for help. This workshop is all about helping students to navigate effectively through the red tape."
The event was co-sponsored by the RHO Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. The organization conducted all workshops at the conference on issues ranging from preparation techniques for the Scholastic Aptitude Test and ACT assessment test to the college admissions process, financial aid process, conducting a successful scholarship and grant search, and college life.
"College access information is always readily available at Representative Williams’ office and his staff works with students throughout the year to prepare them for college," said Donna Puerifoy, a conference co-chairperson. "I can personally testify to Representative Williams' impact on the student community, particularly when it comes to encouraging them to pursue a higher education. His workshops are invaluable to those who are not familiar with the many details that are involved with enrolling. I can fully appreciate his efforts, because my daughter is now a graduate of Delaware State University and my son is now in his first year at Elizabeth State University."
Williams is planning to coordinate several financial aid workshops in the beginning of next year. For more information, contact Williams' constituent service office at 215-763-2559.
