Williams observes World AIDS Day and applauds community activists

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 1 – In honor of World AIDS Day, state Rep. Jewell Williams, D-Phila., is urging Philadelphians to support and attend education and outreach programs on the human immunodeficiency virus and AIDS to promote tolerance and increase safety within the community.

"It seems in recent years, almost no one is talking about AIDS and HIV, but they remain a dangerous and prominent threat in our communities," Williams said. "We need to continue talking about how the disease and virus are transmitted, what needs to be done to find a cure, and how we can help those diagnosed live with dignity and without fear of discrimination."

Williams said he has taken an aggressive role in educating community members within his district on the importance of HIV and AIDS education and helped found a local group dedicated to that cause, Hope Inspiration & Vision through Advocacy Information Dissemination and Support.

The group provides preventative information and support to community members of all ages who have questions regarding HIV and AIDS. It also advocates on behalf of people diagnosed with HIV and AIDS.

"This has been a very successful initiative to promote awareness within Philadelphia, and I consider it one of my best accomplishments within my legislative district," Williams said. "I am very thankful for its dedicated volunteers. I credit the tireless advocacy of Joan 'Penny' Gandy, a faithful volunteer and co-director of Hope Inspiration & Vision, and the Rev. Suzanne Harmon-Carn, co-director, for their work within the community."

Williams said Gandy was interviewed today by ABC about her work and living with HIV.

"I am so glad to be a part of teaching others about HIV/AIDS," Gandy said. "I have been encouraged by my own walk in helping somebody, that my living will not be in vain."

Williams said the group has a number of HIV and AIDS programs and events scheduled for 2010. For more information, please call Williams' constituent service office at 215-763-2559.
