Youngblood: 2008 Community Greening Award now accepting nominations

Phila. lawmaker says award honors those who maintain green spaces to enhance communities

PHILADELPHIA, July 2 – State Rep. Rosita Youngblood, D-Phila., announced that the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is now accepting nominations for the 2008 Community Greening Award, a program that invites city gardeners to showcase their creative displays.

Youngblood said PHS will present the Community Greening Award to individuals, garden clubs, civic associations and community groups who have created and maintained public green spaces that enhance their communities. The deadline to submit a nomination is July 15.

"I would like to encourage all of Philadelphia's gardeners, landscapers and planters to participate in this wonderful competition because keeping parts of our city green and growing is vitally important to community growth," Youngblood said. "We need to continue to promote community gardens and land preservation, and we need to honor those who take the time to keep our city beautiful."

Last summer, 57 nominations were received from all across the state. The nominations included train stations, public parks, Main Street planters, church gardens, and landscapes around municipal buildings and museums. In the end, 37 public sites and their representatives were honored at separate awards ceremonies in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, each receiving a framed certificate and a sign for their garden displaying their accomplishment.
