Youngblood recognizes local resident for contributions to community

HARRISBURG, Sept. 28 – State Rep. Rosita C. Youngblood, D-Phila., is recognizing local resident Tony Moore for his contributions to ending hunger in his community.

"As we mark the end of Hunger Action Month in September, I want to honor Mr. Tony Moore for his years of service feeding the needy in our area," Youngblood said.

In 1991, Moore began distributing food from his front porch. That endeavor turned into an organization now known as Veteran’s United Community Free Food Program, of which Moore is the director.

Youngblood said the food distribution effort is run with the help of a small group of dedicated volunteers and donations from the community.  The program now operates five locations throughout Philadelphia, five days a week according to the following schedule:

·         Monday – 20th Street and Lehigh Avenue

·         Tuesday – 15th Street and Hunting Park Avenue

·         Wednesday – Vernon Park

·         Wednesday – 20th Street and Erie Avenue

·         Thursday – 25th Street and Jackson

"In just one week, Mr. Moore serves more than 175 residents from this Germantown distribution site alone," Youngblood said.  "Mr. Moore's contributions to his community are significant and I would like to thank him for providing such a vital service to our local residents."

Youngblood said she plans to honor Moore with a citation at a Sept. 30 hunger rally she will co-host with state Rep. John Myers, D-Phila. The rally will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Vernon Park, 5800 Germantown Ave.
