Parker encourages students to apply for Phila. City Scholarship

Applications, assistance available at Parker’s constituent service office

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 8 – State Rep. Cherelle Parker, D-Phila., is pleased to announce that applications for the 2008-09 City Scholarship Program are available in her constituent service office.

“I would like to encourage all students who are looking for ways to help pay for college to apply for the Philadelphia City Scholarship,” Parker said. “Finding ways to afford college often hinder many young Philadelphians from getting a higher education but there are options and there are scholarships available. You just have to take the initiative to write the essays and fill out the applications. And my office can help point you in the right direction.”

The Philadelphia City Scholarship Program provides four-year assistance to undergraduate students, primarily for tuition. The program has been in existence since 1959 and has made awards to 2,350 students. Applicants must be in their senior year of high school at the time of application. Additionally, parents or legal guardians of students are required to be residents of the city of Philadelphia. The scholarships may be used for college costs at four-year colleges and universities in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware or Montgomery counties.

“The opportunities are available to all students that qualify and I hope that they all take advantage,” Parker said. “Every penny counts.”

Philadelphia City Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students who are rated and selected by the Philadelphia City Scholarship Committee on the basis of factors relating to academic performance, leadership potential and financial need. These factors are high grades (a minimum of 3.0 or B is required), Scholastic Achievement Test scores, extracurricular activities and writing ability. Financial need is evaluated by an outside organization whose conclusion is forwarded to the city’s program.

The deadline to apply for the Philadelphia City Scholarship Program is Feb. 14.
