Parker: State Police career opportunities available for Pa. minorities, women

PHILADELPHIA, June 27 – State Rep. Cherelle L. Parker, D-Phila., reminds recent graduates and other citizens of the 200th Legislative District interested in a career in law enforcement of the opportunities available through the Pennsylvania State Police.

Parker said individuals, including minorities and women, looking for a career that is rewarding and exciting, as well offering high pay, great benefits and a wealth of experience, should consider applying to the state police. Career opportunities are available in the areas of patrol work to computer crime, as well as diversified law enforcement and investigative specialties.

"The Pennsylvania State Police is a wonderful organization that provides safety, security and protection for the people of this Commonwealth," Parker said. "It is a noble career that pays well and provides strong character. However, the state police have not, historically, been viewed as a viable career option for many women and minorities. That is why it is important to take the time and let all citizens know about the opportunities available."

Sgt. Kristal Turner-Childs, the recruitment section supervisor for the state police, said Pennsylvania is always seeking qualified applicants. However, she said, the agency is attempting to reach out and provide more information to local communities that the state police is an option worth considering for minorities and women.

Applicants must be at least 20 years old, reside in Pennsylvania and have no criminal record. Also, those applying must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate, plus an associate's degree or 60 semester hours at an accredited institution of higher education.

Parker said those interested in a career with the state police should contact Turner-Childs at 717-705-1668, or visit www.patrooper.com for more information.
