Myers invites community to join him for 'A Great Day on the Great Road'

PHILDELPHIA, April 14 – State Rep. John Myers, D-Phila., is urging residents to bring family and friends to Vernon Park from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 19 when Historic Germantown hosts "A Great Day on the Great Road," a nod to the history of Germantown Avenue, once a Native American trail and the historic artery that runs through the northwest neighborhoods of Philadelphia.

The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Groups from Germantown’s 14 historic and cultural landmarks will celebrate the history and community of Philadelphia’s historic northwest corridor through music, food, costumed re-enactors and activities for the family.

Featured performers will include jazz musician Tony Williams. Also on the schedule are costumed re-enactors Millicent Sparks, who will portray African American abolitionist Harriet Tubman, and Noah Lewis, who interprets the life of Ned Hector, a free black Revolutionary War-era soldier.

The Historic Germantown member sites will also feature family-oriented activities, such as papermaking, storytelling and historic kids’ games. In addition, visitors can enjoy German food and a local fish fry, a plant sale, and watch local artists practice their crafts.

Myers will also be at the event, along with his office staff, with information about state programs and services and ready to answer constituents' questions.

This is the first time Historic Germantown has hosted a "Great Day" festival. Myers said organizers hope it will become an annual event.

Residents can get more information about Historic Germantown by e-mailing hgp@germantownhistory.org or calling 215-844-1683.

Vernon Park is located near the corner of Germantown and Chelten avenues. It is easily accessible via SEPTA's 23 and K bus routes as well as the R7 and R8 commuter rail lines.
