Imhotep champs take their record to the House
HARRISBURG, May 12 – Commanding the floor of the state House almost as much as they did the court this past season, the Imhotep Institute Charter High School boys' basketball team was honored in Harrisburg for winning the 2008-09 PIAA state Class AA boys' basketball championship.
State Rep. John Myers, D-Phila., was the host for the players and coaches for their day of recognition in the Capitol. Myers proudly introduced the team and coaches during the House session and presented them with legislative citations for their accomplishment.
The championship is particularly notable because the Germantown school has only been in operation since 1998. Imhotep Institute is a charter school that emphasizes academic and community excellence incorporated with aspects of African heritage.
"The accomplishments of this team and the devotion of coaches such as head coach Andre Noble and his staff are a testimony that with hard work combined with self-discipline and fellowship, the sky is the limit – that nothing is impossible," Myers said.
"And this philosophy is carried over into the school's routine. Yes, we have a team of exceptional basketball players, but these are also young men preparing to enter a wide variety of professions. Imhotep is molding young men and women who will be integral to the community in medical arts, teaching, business, law and the fine arts."
In their march to the state championship, the Imhotep Panthers notched an overall record of 32 wins and only one loss. In the process, they also won the Philadelphia Public League Championship and the Class AA City Championship.
