Property Tax/Rent Rebate deadline extended
Application information available in Rep. Myers’ office
HARRISBURG, June 21 -- State Rep. John Myers today said his office can help anyone who has questions about applying for the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program. The deadline to apply for benefits for 2006 has been extended to Dec. 31.
The program is open to senior citizens 65 or older, widows or widowers 50 or older and residents 18 or older with a permanent disability. For homeowners, household income eligibility limit can be as high as $35,000. For renters, the household income limit is $15,000.
However, Myers emphasized that in determining eligibility, senior citizens may disregard half of their Social Security, Supplemental Security or federal railroad retirement Tier 1 benefits when calculating their income for the rebate program. This means that some people may be able to have a higher income and still qualify for the program.
Eligible residents who meet the income qualifications can receive a rebate of up to $650 on their property taxes or rent paid in 2006.
“If anyone thinks they might qualify, I urge them to contact my office,” Myers said. “We would prefer to help people to arrive at a concrete resolution rather than have anyone mistakenly assume they don’t qualify and don’t apply.”
Residents who have questions about the program or who need information about the application may contact Myers’ constituent service office at 5847 Germantown Ave. in Philadelphia. The phone number is (215) 849-6896.
