Cohen legislation calls for fire extinguishers on school buses
HARRISBURG, Jan. 25 – In an effort to keep Pennsylvania’s children safe on local roadways, state Rep. Mark Cohen, D-Phila., has introduced legislation that would mandate a fire extinguisher be carried on all school buses.
Cohen, the majority caucus chairman, said fires on buses have great potential to cause panic among students and cause them to be trapped. Having a fire extinguisher can reduce the chance of a serious fire and give parents peace of mind.
“In recent years, schools have implemented an increasing number of security measures on their campuses,” Cohen said. “However, less has been done regarding getting our children to and from school safely.
“Students practice evacuating a bus in case of fire, but a remarkable amount of damage can be done in just a few minutes. In addition, there’s the chaos that can ensue when a fire starts in a crowded bus with the children outnumbering the adults.”
Cohen’s bill has 33 co-sponsors at this time, but more legislators are likely to sign on.
