Cohen introduces plan to strengthen local police departments
HARRISBURG, April 5 – State Rep. Mark Cohen, D-Phila., has introduced a plan to get more police officers back on the job following an injury or service with the U.S. Armed Forces.
Cohen said currently many officers returning from military service or from being injured are ineligible to rejoin their colleagues on municipal police forces because in their absence they missed required in-service training.
“This decertification only hurts Pennsylvania’s local communities,” Cohen said. “In a time when police coverage is vital to keeping our towns and neighborhoods safe, we can’t afford to eliminate officers who have been performing their duty overseas, or those who were injured while serving their community at home.”
Cohen said his bill (H.B. 1044) aims to get these law enforcement officers back into their jobs upon their return by allowing them to perform their duties until the next time in-service training and exams are offered.
The legislation has 35 co-sponsors.
