The floods of June have shown us that disasters can happen anytime, anywhere. And when disaster strikes, you may not have much time to respond. Take time now to prepare. Create a family evacuation plan. Pick two places where family members can meet to make sure everyone is OK -- one location should be a safe distance from the house in case of fire, the other should be outside your neighborhood in case you can't return home. Choose an out-of-state friend or family member as a "check-in contact" for everyone to call. Assemble a family disaster supplies kit that includes enough water and non-perishable food to last for three days; non-electric can opener and paper plates, cups and utensils; first aid supplies; medicines; clothing; special items for infants, seniors and disabled persons; important family documents; sanitation supplies; entertainment items such as books and puzzles; battery operated radios and flashlights and extra batteries; and cash or traveler's checks.
