Saint Vincent College awarded $50,000 environmental education grant

HARRISBURG, April 21 – State Rep. Joseph Petrarca, D-Westmoreland/Armstrong/Indiana, today announced that Saint Vincent College has been awarded a $50,000 state environmental education grant to advance its Screen to Stream program exploring local watersheds.

“The grant award to further education about our precious water resources is most appropriate as we celebrate Earth Day Saturday and throughout the weekend,” Petrarca said. “I congratulate all involved in securing the grant and for being part of such an innovative program.”

Under the Screen to Stream program, student scientists explore local watersheds both online and outdoors to appreciate the importance of a healthy environment and the need for environmental protection and resource management.

Five percent of the pollution fines and penalties assessed by the state Department of Environmental Protection fund the Environmental Education Grants Program. Since its inception in 1993, the program has provided more than $11 million in environmental education grants.

The grant to Saint Vincent is among 79 projects statewide that were awarded almost $1.2 million today from DEP.
