Redistricting Reform Discussion

State Representatives Steve Samuelson and Eric Roe co-hosted a roundtable conversation on redistricting reform on May 23 at the state Capitol in Harrisburg. Members of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, Commissioner Peter Yao, Commissioner Cynthia Dai, and Commissioner Stanley Forbes participated in the discussion on how to take politics out of drawing district maps. Samuelson, D-Northampton, and Roe, R-Chester, are the prime cosponsors of legislation to create an independent citizens redistricting commission.

The House of Representatives unanimously passed House Resolution 151, introduced by Rep. Samuelson, honoring Dr. Ronald W. Costen on his retirement from Temple University’s Institute on Protective Services, where he has served as director since 2000.

2 schools, 3 state wrestling champions!

I helped to introduce and salute the region’s state wrestling champions – Nazareth’s 106-pound champ Tyson Klump and Bethlehem Catholic’s Luke Karam at 126 pounds and 285-pound champ Andrew Dunn – in the House of Representatives. Joining us are House Speaker Mike Turzai and state Reps. Marcia Hahn and Joe Emrick, both R-Nazareth.

Budget hearing with the state Revenue Department and the Pennsylvania Lottery.

Rep. Samuelson, Democratic chair of the House Aging and Older Adult Services Committee, was an active participant in a March 9 budget hearing concerning state funding of programs for seniors and the Pennsylvania Lottery. The administration of Gov. Tom Wolf has signaled that it wants to reduce the amount of money transferred out of the Lottery Fund. Rep. Samuelson applauds this effort because it means more money would be available for senior programs.

Rep. Steve Samuelson is sworn in to his ninth term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, where he will continue to serve as Democratic chair of the Aging and Older Adult Services Committee.
