Sanchez applauds affordable housing investment in Abington Township

HARRISBURG, May 31 – State Rep. Ben Sanchez, D-Montgomery, applauds a recently announced affordable housing project investment for Abington Township in Montgomery County.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced Thursday that Abington Township was approved for $400,000 through the HOME program to address a housing affordability problem after the median home value doubled from $141,300 in 2000 to $272,000 by 2011.

The money is ticketed to support efforts to preserve the township’s affordable housing stock through its owner-occupied housing rehabilitation program. HOME’s funding will support that program by promoting the rehabilitation of eight low-moderate income households in Abington.

“Residents of our district deserve fair, affordable housing, and too often hardworking folks are priced out of such opportunities,” Sanchez said. “I’m happy that this funding helps ensure some viable housing opportunities in Abington Township.”

The HOME program provides federal funding to assist municipalities and local governments in their efforts to expand and preserve their supply of affordable housing for low- and very low-income Pennsylvanians. Wolf’s announcement included a total of $3.4 million in funding disbursed to 10 counties.
