The conventional wisdom for long-term financial success is to invest early and often, and don't stop during down markets. That same wisdom applies to Pennsylvania when it comes to investing in education. Pennsylvania has made great new investments in early childhood education programs, which are proven to return big dividends. Studies say every dollar invested in early childhood education saves Pennsylvania $17 down the road through fewer kids who fall through "societal cracks." However, today the state faces a $3.2 billion deficit while so many Pennsylvanians need more help than ever. State Senate Republicans think we can just cut our way out of this crisis by aimlessly slashing state programs, including support to school districts and early childhood education programs. The Senate Republican plan would force school districts to raise property taxes on homeowners, job or no job. It's just not right for the state to shirk its responsibilities by throwing the problem onto the backs of homeowners. We can't let the Senate cut programs that benefit our children's future and Pennsylvania's economic recovery. Please urge your Senator to pass a 2009-10 state budget that maintains early childhood education and protects our most vulnerable citizens.
