Legislation is moving through the House (H.B. 1077) that would mandate all women seeking an abortion in Pennsylvania to have an ultrasound at least 24 hours prior to having the abortion. Disturbing as that is to women's rights, this bill is even more horrific in that it would subject most women to an invasive, transvaginal ultrasound with the screen aimed toward her face. The ultrasound technician would be required to print a picture and the woman would be forced to give the image to her doctor before this legal procedure could be performed. This legislation is offensive, demeaning and wholly unnecessary. That the government may allow this forcible intrusion on a woman is frightening. The Pennsylvania Medical Society and other medical organizations join me in opposition to this bill. Please stop this attack on women. Please let women and their doctors decide what's best for their bodies. Please say NO to House Bill 1077.
